By the way: screw you, Dreamworks

November 30th, 2004

I got Shrek 2 for the girls on DVD, and it has two long, obnoxious, can’t-skip-or-fast-forward-through-them previews for two movies I now firmly intend to avoid in all incarnations. Fuck previews you can’t fast forward through. Does anyone know of DVD software that can skip “unskippable” DVD tracks? Does anyone know a home DVD player [...]

Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving

November 26th, 2004

We ate like the condemned: turkey, stuffing (two kinds), potatoes, spinach, green beans, yams, and of course cranberry. Seven pies and cakes. Much wine. It was pretty great, and I hope everyone else had an equally great day. Now, today is leftovers. Bring me my turkey and stuffing, I wish to grow corpulent!

I don’t recommend commercial products too often…

November 21st, 2004

…but Home Movies, Season One on DVD is a sweet little purchase. I was a fan of Dr. Katz on Comedy Central, and this is by the same folks, with many of the same voice actors. I tivoed a bunch of episodes years ago, but forgot to transfer them to video, so I picked this [...]

Perl is nifty

November 20th, 2004

I’m learning Perl. It’s pretty cool. Unfortunately, my brane is getting old, and is resistant to holding lots of new noodly information, so it’s harder than it would have been ten years ago. Which sucks. But Perl is sort of nifty. I haven’t gotten into the stuff that makes it look like a comic strip [...]

Annoying fact of the day

November 16th, 2004

17.7% of the US population determines half of the composition of the Senate (and is overrepresented in the electoral college, as well.) Going by the population numbers found here.

Congrats to Valve

November 16th, 2004

Updated divorce stats

November 14th, 2004

I didn’t post the reference link before for my earlier stats, but it is here at Divorceform.org. The stats were for 1994, which is a tad stale, especially since today my mom sent me a link to this NYT article on this very topic (free registration required). Apparently the red states are more than a [...]

Izzy’s Latest Joke

November 14th, 2004

So Izzy has taken to saying, “You’re so silly!” whenever anyone (including herself) has done something funny. Of course, it comes out, “You’re so SIWWY!” when she says it. Anyway, just to shake things up, while I was in Florida at my parents’, she started saying, in response to something funny, “You’re so PEANUT BUTTER!” [...]

Red states: this is what you have unleashed

November 14th, 2004

The CIA is being purged. Of incompetent intelligence analysts? Nope. It is being purged of people viewed as disloyal to Bush: of Democrats, of liberals, of leakers who embarrassed Bush. Goss has his orders, and he’s getting down to work. Night of the Long Knives, 2004 style. And yeah, I mean everything implied by that [...]

Back in Massachusetts

November 14th, 2004

I was gone for a few days, down in Florida visiting my family. Last week, my father suffered a heart attack, and though the prognosis was good and the practical effect was pretty much as mild as one could hope, I went down to see him anyway. I spent the second half of the week [...]
