Back in Massachusetts

December 29th, 2004

So we’re back from Christmas with my parents. It was hectic, enough that this is in fact our second day back and I slept all day yesterday. The kids had a great time, and their cousin entertained them beautifully. My sister and brother-in-law were also great babysitters, and were excellent Scrabble opponents. I should know [...]

Merry Christmas

December 25th, 2004

Merry Christmas to everyone. The family has now moved into the tense and surly phase of the holiday, and we’re swiftly driving each other batshit. Plus, someone spilled coffee on my dad’s wireless keyboard, and I know I’ll get the blame that his spacebar doesn’t work anymore.

The new Apple 30 inch flatscreen

December 23rd, 2004

2560 x 1600 pixels of delicious goodness. I want. Just crazy.

My niece and her friend rule

December 21st, 2004

Hanging out with family, and my niece and her friend made a treasure hunt for Mona and Isabel. For some reason, my father has a big box of Christmas teddy bears and few folks to give them to, so they’ve been in the attic for a while. They became the hunted objects in a treasure [...]

Christmas is here

December 21st, 2004

And as a parent, I’m discovering exactly how it is that parents can end up spoiling their kids. There are a bunch of complicated motivations that lead to Toy Mountain under one’s Christmas tree: 1. You forgot that what you bought three months ago is still cool. Yeah, we bought some Disney DVDs on sale [...]

It’s winter

December 20th, 2004

Last day of autumn (officially) and we have an inch of snow on the ground, and probably an inch or more to fall. Mona was jumping up and down in front of the window, and kept telling me to look at the snow falling. It’s cool to see kids excited about snow, and to remember [...]

Woo! Beltre!

December 17th, 2004

Hot damn, Adrian Beltre is a Mariner! That’s the best news since forever, for M’s fans. Beltre led the NL in home runs last year with 48, while the M’s were in last place for all MLB teams in home runs. Beltre is an excellent defensive 3B-man, and was obtained for a relative bargain price, [...]

In what world does this make sense?

December 16th, 2004

The M’s signed Richie Sexson for 4 years, $48 million dollars. That’s elite-level money for a decent-level player, who has just come off one of the worst possible injuries a guy like him could have: a power-robbing shoulder tear for a guy whose only exceptional tool is his power. How is it that he gets [...]

The FCC dances to the tune of a teeny group of asshats

December 14th, 2004

99.9% of all complaints to the FCC come from one group. The one exception is the Janet Jackson / Superbowl event, that saw a lot of complaints from a lot of folks. But the Parents Television Council is generating almost all the complaints that the FCC gets. Talk about the tail wagging the dog, here. [...]

I’m getting fat

December 14th, 2004

And I choose to blame my sister Kaye. It’s as reasonable as any explanation, what with her delicious Thanksgiving with seven freaking pies. It’s a much better plan than doing something like facing up to the fact that I’m 36 and I don’t get enough exercise and I eat like I do. It’s all Kaye’s [...]
